简　　介  

　　故事发生在一个不著名的极权主义国家，没有交接具体时候，在一座因关押政治犯而污名昭著的牢狱里，狱警乔(范恩斯 饰)负责看管著名的政治犯，剧作家索恩（唐纳德·萨瑟兰 饰）。  
　　    作为地下否决构造的首领，索恩努力于经过可骇主义活动和游击战颠覆以总统儒尼奥尔为首的独裁政府。虽然乔不尽赞成索恩的可骇主义主张，但相处之下索恩凭着剧作家的雄辩谈锋使乔起头思疑现有政权的正当性。此时，索恩的跟随者策动了内战并节节成功，在庞大的压力下，儒尼奥尔被迫开释了索恩，内战得以停息。  
　　    索恩凭仗号令力成为民族豪杰，乔则成为总统保护队的管辖，索恩游说乔变节总统。在一个黝黑的夜里，反动者潜入总统府，在一场模拟审判后，儒尼奥尔和第一夫人（罗拉·弗琳·鲍儿 饰）被就地处决。  
　　    索恩掌权后推行激进的反动政策，常识份子被送进集合营停止再教育，年轻人以向奥秘差人密告怙恃为荣，甚至好通灯的色彩也被颠倒，红灯暗示可以通行。对此暗示激烈否决的乔也被送进集合营，新的统治者诡计使他认可，在这个国家没有发生过任何政变。  
　　    愈发狂狂的索恩政权终极难逃毁灭，他和其他带领人被暗杀，旧政权复辟，集合营里的人纷纷获释，但乔由于加入过颠覆上任政府的政变，一向被关押在狱中。  
　　    二十年曩昔了，乔成为牢狱里唯一的犯人，他逐日坐在打字前，回忆所履历过的一切，至于他所论述的究竟能否确曾发生过，还是出于他的臆想，没人晓得……
