　　本片改编自Joe Gores推理小说。故事关于一位侦察小说作家汉密特由于职业牵扯到一宗扑朔迷离的奥秘案件中，而对他往后的工作影响深远，汉密特受人之托到旧金山寻觅一位名叫“小晶”的失落中国女孩，成果发现了连续串谋杀的“自杀”案件，在侦察进程中，汉密特几近丧命，但到了最初，发现凶手居然是……
　　1928年的美国旧金山，时年34岁的哈麦特还是一个低微而失意的低级杂志的雇佣文人，并饱受在一战的军队里染上肺病的熬煎。哈麦特年轻时曾在平克顿私人侦察公司工作过一段时候，现在，他就以写侦破小说为生。那天早晨，就在他正在写侦破小说的最初一页时，小说中的仆人公赖恩忽然出现了。他要哈麦特帮他找一个叫克里斯泰·林的16岁的中国姑娘。哈麦特随身照顾的小说稿在寻觅林的进程中丧失了，而他同赖恩也落空了联系。回到公寓的哈麦特看到林正在那边，她自认：黑社会的头子方伟堂将她卖给了一个叫卡拉汉的人，而卡拉汉的妻子在妒忌心的驱使下将丈夫杀掉。在方伟堂开的赌场里，哈麦特用钱买回了丧失的小说稿。他又在差人局看到了一具听说是林的尸身，尸身已被毁容，他同时还旁观了一部关于林和六个汉子厮混的影片。本来，摄影师索尔特雇了赖恩去寻觅林，卡拉汉的律师黑兹唐在打手诡计打死哈麦特时救了他一命。哈麦特看到林和赖恩在码头上，他终究大白：这两人本来是一伙的。林打死了想密告她的赖恩。哈麦特的稿子掉进了水里，遂爽性以这几天的冒险履历为主体，重新创作了一部小说：《马耳他之鹰》。
