　　爱好探险，对奥秘宝藏布满了向往的李登布罗克教授（詹姆斯·梅森 James Mason 饰）在无意当中发现了一张历史悠久的羊皮纸，羊皮纸上记录了一位名叫阿尔纳的男人已经前往地心探险的线路图。欣喜若狂的李登布罗克教授立即决议重走趟布满了危险和未知的地心之旅。
　　虽然遭到了朋友们的激烈否决，李登布罗克教授还是带着侄子决然决然地震身了。两人的旅途始于德国汉堡，以后，来自冰岛的汉斯（Peter Ronson 饰）成为了他们牢靠的领导。三人来到了斯奈菲尔火山口，今后进上天表之下，在长达三个月的旅程中履历了各种光怪陆离的现象，碰见了无数光怪陆离的动动物，甚至相逢了奥秘的种族。
