　　滋賀県?琵琶湖畔には、水と深く関わった昔ながらの人々の暮らしがあります。集落の中には網の目のように水路がはりめぐらされ、人々はその豊富な水を操纵し暮らしています。その水路を棲家にする生き物達もまた、人々の暮らしと密接に関わりあっています。
　　春を告げるコイのもんどり漁、初夏のヨシズ作り、水辺で人知れず羽化するオニヤンマ、晩秋のヨシ刈り、やがてやってくる冬…。
　　この52分のドキュメンタリー作品は、滋賀県?琵琶湖北部を舞台に、人と自然が織り成す、命きらめく水の里の1年を、映像と音声に拘りハイビジョンカメラで2年近くをかけて撮影した珠玉の映像詩です。
　　NHKが継続的に取材を続けてきた「映像詩 里山 命めぐる水辺」は、水と緻密な関わりをもつ人と生き物の天下を、斬新かつ美しい映像で描いた作品として国際的にも高い評価を受けました。
　　2005年10月にイタリア賞最優秀受賞番組として放送しましたNHKスペシャル版と合わせ、動物学者で自然番組のプロデュサーとしても名高いデービッド?アッテンボロー氏がナレーションを担任しました国際版(英語版)も収録されています。
