　　电影拔取的美国南北战争中的一段实在历史。1864年5月1日，北方联邦(Union)和南方同盟(Confederate )军队在弗吉尼亚州的谢南多厄河谷(Shenandoah Valley)展开苦战，亦称为Battle of New Market，南方同盟在告急迎战北方联邦的情况下以少胜多的一场战争。南方同盟的军队里有一支由247名弗吉尼亚军事学院(Virginia Military Institute, VMI)陆军学员组成的小队。这部电影主如果报告VMI的陆军学员怎样穿越枪林弹雨介入到这场战争中。在掠取一处高山的战役中，几位VMI学员的鞋子遗漏 在泥地里，是以这片地方被称为Field of Lost Shoes。这场战争里共有10名VMI学员牺牲，其中6名葬在现在的VMI校园里。
