　　江户时代，纸店老板治兵卫（中村吉右衛門 饰）厌倦了日渐丑陋的妻子阿御（岩下志麻 饰）和索然无味的生活，他持久与妓女小春（岩下志麻 饰）待在一路，并许诺为其赎身。三年时光倏忽而逝，治兵卫的赎身钱始终没法凑齐，小春没法忍受天天接待分歧的汉子，她与治兵卫相约共赴黄泉。私奔当晚，治兵卫的表兄——同时也是阿御的哥哥孙右卫门（滝田裕介 饰）找到小春，因阿御已经奉求小春借助丈夫，是以她上演一处变心闹剧，迫使治兵卫放弃了自己。回归到一般生活的治兵卫闷闷不乐，某日他从岳母口入耳说小春行将嫁给巨贾，他和妻子担忧小春会为了自己而死，因而佳耦俩凑钱预备为这个坚毅的女子赎身……
　　本片取材于近松门左卫门的“净琉璃"作品，并荣获1970年电影旬报最好女配角（岩下志麻）、最好导演和最好影片奖。
◎幕后揭秘
　　影片中的仆人公遭到封建道德的重重约束，心里很是苦闷，为了与心爱的人求得自在息争放，他们只能挑选私奔的传统方式，最初只能以死来暗示他们对吃人的封建道德的抵挡。影片充实应用了中世纪戏剧形式的歌舞伎“净琉璃”，并设备了黑衣来串联剧情，音乐感也很强，自始至终布满了诗情画意。影片曾获1969年《电影旬报》十佳奖第一位，并获第24届日本逐日电影比赛奖日本电影奖、音乐奖、录音奖，还入选了日本名片200部。
