　　時は大正の終り信州。生き別れの母を探し求めながら渡世修業の旅を続ける妻恋いお駒は、渡世の義理で大薮組親分を斬ってしまった。やがて小諸十六島一家の賭場に足を踏み入れたお駒は、そこで幼ない娘お夏を連れた流れ者筑波常治と知りあった。賭場を出たお駒は、後を追ってきた大薮一家の男たちに襲われ、その窮地を常治に救われた。常治がわらじをぬいだ十六島一家と、野沢一家のでいりはその夜のことであった。一宿一飯の義理のために死を覚悟した常治は、長野から三里ほど入った山の中にある鹿教井温泉の猿渡屋の祖怙恃のもとに、お夏を届けてほしいとお駒に頼んだ。鹿教井温泉の湯元の利権は、昔から猿渡屋、鹿の湯、鳴沢屋の三軒の旅館が握っていたが、今、二年後の鉄道開通に目をつけた博徒石渡組によって鳴沢屋は乗っとられ、残った旅館にも圧力が加えられていた。石渡組の魔手はお夏にも伸び、人質になったお夏を救うためお駒は単身石渡組に乗りこんでいった。無事お夏を救いだしたものの、お駒の後を追ってきて石渡に身をよせた大薮一家の身内のために、猿渡屋は焼かれ、善兵衛らは斬られてしまった。お駒は、急を聞いて駆けつけた常治と、喧嘩支度に身を整え石渡組に殴りこんでいった。二人のドスと拳銃は石渡を倒したが、ひそんでいた子分の放った銃弾が常治の胸を貫いた。
