　　仆人公赛生活在巴西的穷乡僻壤，最值钱的产业就是一头驴。当他的驴子患沉痾时，他向天主许愿，只要驴子能康复，他会像耶稣那样扛着十字架，一向从故乡到省府。后来驴子真的康复了，他便上路还愿。题目是，他最初把十字架给教堂时，教士听了他的来由后拒绝接管。缘由是赛不应做这类似的宣誓许诺。赛却不愿死心，一向在教堂里面等待。这样一来，他成了消息人物，轰动了主教。听凭主教的再三劝说，赛就是不愿放弃。当他的妻子与人通奸的丑闻而引发了一场暴乱时，他却在紊乱中丧生。赛死后，人们将他的尸身放在十字架上，了结了他生前的心愿。虽然本片获得了嘎纳大奖，但仍然是一部被人轻忽的电影。有些影史专家还是赐与了影片极高的历史职位。
