影片报告一位不成救药的老太婆，忖量久未碰头的儿子。而儿子却因政治缘由正在服刑，儿媳编造老公在美国排演戏剧，工作太忙不能回家的美好假话隐瞒真相，为此捏造美国来信以慰老人。未几老人病逝。风云阵变，儿子获释出狱，故里照旧，而亲人不在。最初的镜头落在与妻子的相拥而泣上，画面淡出，不由欷歔。
