　　FBI奸细乔（杰弗里·迪恩·摩根 Jeffrey Dean Morgan 饰）和同伴凯瑟琳（艾比·考尼什 Abbie Cornish 饰）正在观察一宗连环杀人案，此案件手段之凶残，逻辑之紊乱让两名捕快感应无从动手。无法之下，他们找到了隐居多年的通灵神探约翰（安东尼·霍普金斯 Anthony Hopkins 饰），希望借助他的特异功用找到有用的线索。
　　
　　但是，案件的凶手似乎晓得了约翰的重出江湖，他不但绝掉臂忌的再度犯案，还留下了布满搬弄意味的字条。随着观察的深入，约翰逐步发现，凶手居然和他一样具有通灵才能，而和他相比，自己一方明显落入了下风，丝毫没有翻身的机遇。就在约翰一行人穷途末路之时，凶手居然自动献出了真身。
