该片改编自英国现今最红的小说家之一John Fowles（约翰·傅敖斯）的童贞作。他的作品很多，其中，长篇小说有六部，别的有一部中、短篇故事集。长篇小说中已有三部拍成电影：The Collector《蝴蝶春梦》，The Magus《占星家》和The French Lieutenant's Woman《法国中尉的女人》。
