　　雨夜，雷伊（约翰?盖兹 John Getz 饰）跟艾比（弗兰西斯?麦克多蒙德 Frances McDormand 饰）在酒店偷情。雷伊是酒吧伙计，而艾比则是酒吧老板玛迪（丹?哈达娅 Dan Hedaya 饰）的妻子。玛迪思疑妻子出轨，是以雇佣侦察维斯观察。知悉真相的玛迪怒不成遏，潜入雷伊家，诡计绑走妻子，却在厮打中受伤。玛迪密会维斯，决议花钱做掉二人。维斯潜入雷伊家翻到了艾比的手枪。返来后，维斯给玛迪看了两人被杀的照片，趁玛迪不备，将其击毙。雷伊发现玛迪尸身，误以为艾比所为，是以毁尸灭迹。早晨，雷伊再次回到酒吧，鲜明发现了威斯捏造的照片。这时，雷伊和艾比都不晓得，灭亡的威胁正在步步紧逼……
　　本片为科恩兄弟的童贞作，创作于1984年，只用了80万美圆，2个月即拍摄完成。2009年，制片人张伟平斥资200万美圆购得本片版权，约请张艺谋据此拍摄了《三枪拍案惊奇》。
