菲莉芭（凯特 布兰切特 Cate Blanchett 饰）为了替家人复仇，便宜了按时炸弹，偷偷安置在毒贩的办公室内，并支开了不知情的女秘书。但是，不幸还是发生了。由于清洁工扫除，她并没有将仇人炸死，反而扳连了4条无辜的生命。菲莉芭以为大仇得报，所以在被警方拘系后，供认不讳， 毫无悔意。由于她对峙用英文，所以警局的书记员菲利普（吉尔瓦尼 雷比西 Giovanni Ribisi 饰）自愿做了翻译。在警方的严厉审判中，她才领会真相，为此疾苦不已。菲利普也从中领会了她的身世遭受：她曾给意大利警局不竭写信，但是却杳无音信，是以她思疑警局内也有人介入贩毒，知情人甚至要将她灭口。这时，菲利普偷偷地帮助她逃离了差人局，两小我在磨难中建立了真挚的豪情，并肩作战，揭开了一条贩毒的灰色好处链……
