故事发生在悠远的2057年，太阳的逐步衰竭让人类行将面临有史以来最大的危机，假如落空了日照，大地将会堕入黑暗和冰封当中，永无再会天日之时。为了拯救地球，一支八人行动小组组成了，他们别离是稳重老城的机长凯恩达（真田广之 饰）、动物学俊彦卡伦佐（杨紫琼 饰）、航海高手特雷（本尼迪特·王 Benedict Wong 饰）、物理学家卡帕（希里安·墨菲 Cillian Murphy 饰）、驾驶员卡西（萝丝·拜恩 Rose Byrne 饰）和她的助手马斯（克里斯·埃文斯 Chris Evans 饰），批示官哈维（特洛伊·格雷提 Troy Garity 饰）以及博士希瑞尔（克利夫·柯蒂斯 Cliff Curtis 饰）。
