◎简 介
芝加哥发生了一桩震动全城的可骇血案。当地一间教堂的主教罗森惨遭杀戮，身上被刻上奥秘数字，警方拘系了那时在场身染血迹的犯罪怀疑人阿伦（ Edward Norton 饰）。马丁（理查•基尔 Richard Gere 饰）作为阿伦的辩解律师，和他的前女友检控官珍妮特较上了劲。
马丁并不在意究竟，他为阿伦辩解的唯一目标就是要赢得讼事，让自己一战成名。而珍妮特作为正义的代表固然寸步不让。珍妮特（劳拉•琳妮 Laura Linney 饰）观察得知罗森主教生前曾对阿伦等人停止性加害，而阿伦关于自己得了“时候失忆”症的辩解亦显得荒谬，关于他提到的凶案证人一向都未找到。珍妮特以为杀人动机等一切证据俱全。
马丁捏词阿伦患神经病使其成功脱罪，但是，一切皆出人料想。
