　　1953年的纽约，杀虫人比尔（Peter Weller 饰）停止着孤独的小我写作，只要两个好友知晓他的文学尝试。比尔的妻子琼（Judy Davis 饰）沉迷于注射杀虫粉，比尔为她造访了戒毒医生班威，未几被麻醉品治理处传讯，在那边他碰到了能措辞的虫子，它指出比尔的实在身份是一位特务，比尔惊慌失措的逃回家，开枪误杀妻子，只得依照怪异生物的指导远赴中东的“区间”出亡。当地的黑肉场场主、美国作家和他酷似琼的妻子、同性恋贩子、以及集市上的女人看起来无不是一桩诡计的一部分，比尔在自己那台会措辞的打字机“克拉克诺瓦”的帮助下停止创作，并不竭接近诡计的真相，在又一次落空了琼今后，比尔发现了区间同班威医生的联系。
　　本片获1993年伦敦电影节年度女演员奖，1992年加拿大吉尼奖最好导演、最好摄影等多项嘉奖。按照威廉·罗伯斯同名小说改编。

　　影片改编自美国作家威廉·巴洛斯的同名典范颓丧小说，小说的主题是海洛因和吸毒。影片所触及的则满是虚拟的所谓“毒品”，毒品在片中仅仅作为布景出现。以杀虫专家身份出现的比尔由于对杀虫药粉沉迷而亲身尝试，这是导演克罗南伯格的缔造，对此巴勒斯暗示欣赏。片中有很多怪僻的形象，如打字机遇酿成讲话的虫子、键盘从其脸上长出、纸张其重新顶铺开等，这些都表现了导演本人一向鄙弃电影建造范围的创作气概。
