　　米兰妮（蒂比·海德莉 Tippi Hedren 饰）是一个富家女，偶然在宠物店里碰见律师米契（罗德泰勒Rod Taylor 饰），二人萌生爱意。第二天米兰妮带着她的一对宠物鹦鹉到访米契居住的波德加湾小镇，却被一只海鸥攻击，就地受伤。但是谁也没推测，此次鸟攻击人的事务，只是鸟类大范围进犯人类的弁言幕。
　　米兰妮留在镇上疗伤，这里柳绿桃红，生活原本安静，她还熟悉了米契的家人和前女友，于米契的豪情也渐渐升温，可是鸟类的出没对他们生活的骚扰水平也渐渐升级。这些鸟聚集的越来越多，黑压压的一大片，被它们进犯至伤甚至至死的居民日渐增加，这个小镇堕入一片疯狂的鸟灾傍边。人们恐惧接近解体，若何赶紧逃走这个可骇的地方，成了他们迫在眉梢的题目。

　　本片可以称为动物灾难片的先驱，是希区柯克试图超越《惊魂记》的作品。编导并没有说明鸟群向人类策动应战的缘由，暗示着自然之力对人类的威慑。整场鸟灾拍得惊心动魄，屡次操纵鸟的主观镜头和节奏爽利的剪接手法制造出激烈的戏剧悬疑。本片中的严重氛围一变态态没有借助音乐。1994年的电视片续集完全不配看成希区柯克作品的子孙。
