　　1940年9月，德、意、日三国建立同盟。山本五十六被录用为日本结合舰队总司令，并不能不“违反自己的志愿”，接管号令对美、英、荷等国开战。1941后12月8日零时，山本五十六亲身下达了“1280”密码号令，并亲身率领军队狙击美国珍珠港，从而对美军承平洋舰队形成重创，大胜而归。随后山本五十六倡议与美国讲和，但定见未被采用。在批示中途岛战争时，由于计谋上的严重失误，日本水兵蒙受惨重损失。情势蓦地逆转，美军攻势如虹，日军兵败如山倒。瓜达康纳岛上有三万多名日本陆军，他们遭到了美军飞机的昼夜轰炸，陷于绝境。山本五十六派出舰队炮击美军基地，辅佐尚存的陆军平安退却。1943年4月18日，山本五十六为了鼓舞火线军队的士气，乘坐一架轰炸机到火线观察。没想到日军的密码被美军窃取，美军派出空军机队将山本五十六的座机击落，一代甲士山本五十六就此碎尸于承平洋上空。
