　　不切现实的胡想家卡文在机场为了逃债慌忙中发现了来驱逐25年未碰头的老朋友德莱克的盖瑞一家人。因而他情急智生，冒充自己是德莱克，钻进了盖瑞的车摆脱了眼前的危机。
　　盖瑞带他来到斯维克里高中职业节的会场上，由于德莱克是妹校请来的成功人士，要在会上作为嘉宾并颁发演讲。面临一双双期待的眼睛，他不晓得德莱克的丝毫情况，无从编造他的成功经历，他甚至不晓得德莱克的职业。尔后，在高尔夫球场上、在品酒现场、在手术台前他都是手忙脚乱，穷于对付，由于德莱克是一切这些方面的专家，他是一位出色的牙医。
　　这一切终极被实在的德莱克的到来揭穿了，他是看到有人冒充自己去妹校颁发演讲的消息后赶来的。与他一同前来的还有追债的黑帮份子。虽然他欺骗了盖瑞一家人，可是他们在短短的几天里已经和他结下了友谊：他帮助盖瑞和妻子化解了冲突，帮助大女儿找回了落空的情人，帮助小儿子勇敢空中临应战，和小女儿一同看动画片……他是最了解他们的朋友。而他也改变了自己，之前他只是讨取，现在他体味到支出的欢畅。更重要的是，他领会了友谊的珍贵。
