　　影片改编自美国作家威廉·巴洛斯的同名典范颓丧小说，小说的主题是海洛因和吸毒。影片所触及的则满是虚拟的所谓“毒品”，毒品在片中仅仅作为布景出现。以杀虫专家身份出现的比尔由于对杀虫药粉沉迷而亲身尝试，这是导演克罗南伯格的缔造，对此巴勒斯暗示欣赏。片中有很多怪僻的形象，如打字机遇酿成讲话的虫子、键盘从其脸上长出、纸张其重新顶铺开等，这些都表现了导演本人一向鄙弃电影建造范围的创作气概。
