　　公元前73年，来自古罗马利比亚省的仆从斯巴达克斯（柯克•道格拉斯 Kirk Douglas 饰）在加普亚肉搏黉舍中爱上了女奴瓦瑞妮娅（琼•西蒙斯 Jean Simmons 饰）。同年，肉搏黉舍的仆从在斯巴达克斯率领下策动叛逆，获得自在，随后斯巴达克斯与瓦瑞妮娅团圆，结为佳耦。叛逆震动了罗马的统治团体，激化了元老院中贵族派战争民派的冲突。贵族将领克拉苏（劳伦斯•奥利维尔 Laurence Olivier 饰）伺机击败平民派首领格拉古（查尔斯•劳顿 Charles Laughton 饰），夺取了首席执政官的权利，实行独裁。格拉古为了冲击克拉苏，筹算私下放走仆从雄师；克拉苏却重金拉拢了海盗，并召回在国外作战的两支雄师。斯巴达克斯叛逆兵三面受敌，寡不抵众，数万仆从战死，他与妻子和六千幸存战友均被克拉苏所俘。在最初的关头，由于格拉古的帮助，情况又发生了变化。
