简　　介  

　　1901年，一个小偷（梅尔·吉布森饰）犯下了谋杀罪，正期待处决。典狱长的妻子（黛安·基顿饰）决议替天主拯救他的灵魂。她为他读《圣经》，希望他被绞死后，灵魂可以升上天堂，而不是堕入天堂。他们相互吸引。她帮他策划逃狱，然后与他会合。在逃窜途中，他们做了爱，但仅此一次。政府的搜捕逼近时，她意想到他只要死路一条了，因而决议和他一路去死。“开枪打死我吧，”她哀告他，“我决不想比你多活一天。”他扣动扳机，但只是打伤了她。在终局处，她被判毕生禁锢，但她带着自豪走进自己的监房，一口痰吐向牢狱看管的眼睛。
