韩国战争结束之后小白山脈天王峰脚底下的一个村落，男人们因为战争而死去使得这里变成了寡妇村。有一天智异山共军奎福（申荣均 饰）来到了村子，詹礼（朱宗女 饰）帮助他隐藏起来，二人的心也自然而然地走近了。不久关于来了一个男人的新闻开始在村子里到处传开了，两人的关系最终被跟踪詹礼的司月（度金凤 饰）所发现，她以告发奎福来威胁，使得奎福和她发生关系。不久之后剿灭共匪的扫荡展开了，奎福藏身的林子却突然燃起了山火，为了躲避山火而逃出森林的奎福最终被子弹击中身亡。
◎幕后揭秘
本片根据韩国著名剧作家차범석1963年刊登在《现代文学》上的同名小说改编而成的。他是与当时既存的战争电影的观点和思想体系大不相同的电影，与金洙容的前作《渔村》观点基本一致——战争纷飞的年代，等待出外征战的男丁回来却等来了噩耗的女人们变形的欲望。片中的男主角奎福懦弱而欠决断力，反而被女人牵制最终毁掉了一生，导演没有显露出自己谁非谁是的判断，只是暗示战争催生了新形的阶级关系。片中的男女关系被赤裸裸地展现在镜头的面前，男人为了保住性命，甚至只是为了温饱，变成了女人手中的玩偶，导演镜头下的悲剧虽惨烈却赋予了生动的滑稽性，是部深度和娱乐性并存的影片。结局时，主人公在悬崖边上的怒喊情景，更是多次被评选为韩国电影史最令人难忘的镜头之一。
《山火》此后曾被翻拍过两次。本片参加了第十七届柏林国际电影节的展映，并获得了包括第五届青龙奖最佳女主角在内的多个韩国本土的电影大奖。Video
