柏木达也（江口洋介饰）自马拉松退役后，打算回乡下结婚，开始新的人生。同时，他也打算找回四散各地的弟弟妹妹——7年前父母双亡后，兄弟们便天各一方。
7年的时空间隔，如今，每个人有着截然不同的际遇：和上司有不伦关系的小雪（酒井法子饰）、被医院院长收为养子的雅也（福山雅治饰）、混迹街头的不良少年和也（いしだ壹成饰）、高中生小梅（大路惠美饰）和因事故而双腿残疾的文也（山本耕史饰）。纵使是亲人也难免心生嫌隙……
可达也决心承担起家庭的重担，无论如何也要让大家重新团聚在一起，他克服了重重困难，甚至牺牲了自己的婚事……
于是，手足6人终于聚在“同一屋檐下”，一个事故和意外频生，拌嘴和冲突不断，但是同时也是充满了欢声笑语的温馨家庭的平凡故事就此上演。
◎幕后揭秘
江口洋介的第二春就是从本片开始的，自从东京爱情故事以后，他拍了不少爱情剧目，但受欢迎的程度则远远低于扬名之作。在这个以多兄妹为主角的家庭剧中，他一改往日潇洒多情的形象，演活了那个为了亲人的幸福而无所顾惜的傻大哥。其中久违的家庭亲情令生活在现代独子单亲等家庭中的人们倍感人世间的温暖与美好，由此创造出了日本由始以来最高的收视率 (该记录现由《美丽人生》打破)。
对于在片中扮演另外五个兄弟姐妹的演员，这部片子使得他们一夜之间身价倍增。在第一部完结后，五人各有发展，其中最为著目的当是酒井法子和福山雅治，二人均拍出不少剧目。第二部同一屋檐下在四年之后才出现，但收视率同样超群。
